Controversial Nigerian Celebrity Break-Ups

By Anthony Ada Abraham

The entertainment industry is filled with different issues on daily basis. While some are busy working on mending their relationships, others are with reckless abandonment breaking theirs.
Eucharia Anunobi
People like Fred and Agatha Amata, Anne Njemanze and Segun Arinze, Solomon Akiyesi, Kenneth Okonkwo, Uche Ogbodo, Chiege Alisigwe who was once married to Tony Ebbe, Ayo Adesanya and Goriola Hassan.

Lola Alao’s former husband attacked her severally in the media and said unprintable things about her when their marriage crashed, Doris Simeon and Daniel Ademonikan, Mbong and Jeta Amata, the marriage between Foluke Daramola and Tunde Sobowale crashed few years after, Regina Askia was briefly married to a money bag, Charles Orie, but she dumped him for American Ruddy Williams while fans were pained at the separation of Faithia and Saheed Balogun.

Also, Shan George has been married and divorced thrice. Her divorce from Tony Nwosisi was very controversial. Clarion Chukwura has been married and divorced at least twice and Stella Damasus and Emeka Nzeribe didn’t stay up to a year in their marriage to the consternation of fans. Stella rushed into that marriage and rushed out.

But Kate Henshaw and her British ex, Mr Nuttal shocked fans with their separation after about 10 years of marriage which produced a daughter.
The industry, which is fast becoming like its western counterparts, has seen many celebrities accused of infidelity or incompatibility. One of the shocking incidents was the case of Monalisa Chinda and Dejo Richards.

Also, an official statement was sent out by Monalisa Chinda not only ending her romantic relationship with Mr Lanre Nzeribe, they also ended their business relationship.

That was not how Eucharia Anunobi’s marriage crashed because her’s was said to be infidelity. When Charles Egwu, the Anambra State born ex-hubby of the star actress was said to have absconded, leaving Eucharia in the lurch with their only child Joshua, people started wondering why he did so; especially people who were close to UK as she was fondly called.

Reason was that the Mbaise born diva was committed to that marriage. She did a lot of things you wouldn’t have ordinarily expected her to do because she wanted it to work. By all means, she put in her best to ensure her marriage would not hit the rocks. But maybe, just maybe, her best wasn’t good enough for Charles.

A movie producer once confided in me immediately after Eucharia’s marriage failed that he too was surprised that Charles could abscond because UK was proud of him; that she boasted to whoever cared to listen that her marriage would never crash because she was a good cook, hot in bed, expert in tidying the house and more importantly she wasn’t a lazy bone, so what would a man be looking for?

The movie producer felt pity for her when he started reading her divorce stories on the pages of soft sell magazines where she unveiled allegations of how she fed her ex-hubby, clothed him, paid the rent and was still loyal to him, yet the guy had the audacity to sleep with their housemaid and later took a walk.

But guess what? This bitter experience hasn’t stopped UK from yearning to remarry. She longs badly to have a man she could answer his name even after all she went through in her previous marriage. That’s just a pity.

In addition, the marriage, which was contracted on Saturday May 26, 2012, months after Kenny Oloyede and Funke Akindele were first spotted at Industry Nite, at the Oriental Hotel entered serious trouble waters. With allegations ‘Almaroof, the man who stole Funke’s heart, swept her off her feet and landed her in the altar, became a serial baby daddy, keeping a string of affairs, and even returning to the women he had prior to the celebrity wedding with Funke Akindele, it was only a matter of time before it was all out in the air.

Just like Mercy Johnson, who had a big pre-wedding scandal on her hands after the wife of the man she was to marry stepped out and tried to stop the wedding, Funke also had disgruntled wives to contend with. There were many fans, friends and colleagues too, who felt she did not need to settle with an already married man; with the attendant drama and chaos.

But, as it is in the things of love, just like Mercy, Funke went ahead to tie the knot in what was unarguably, the most expensive, most glamorous celebrity wedding of 2012. ‘Everyone close to them knows the thing is not working and Funke is very unhappy. People have been advising her. She has just been busy shooting and trying to occupy herself. They have not even lived together since then. But they had to go separate ways,’ a source said. This is what the official statement by Ayo Ola- Muhammed, Principal Consultant, NEECEE Entertainment said:

“On behalf of our client, star actress, Funke Akindele, we want to formally inform you that after due consultation and consideration, she’s now separated from Mr Kehinde Oloyede as his wife. She hereby urges her fans and all concerned to pray and wish her the best as she moves on in her career. Kindly note that this is the first and only official statement from Funke Akindele on the matter and will be glad if her wish is respected.” That’s how it ended after a one year relationship.

And Chika Ike’s heart-breaking story put to rest her resolve to live her life to the fullest after being a victim of domestic violence by her ex-husband Tony.

“The past three-years has been a very emotional period for me, I focused my energy on work and to build back my self-esteem.

Though Uche Iwuji’s marriage to Juwon Lawal lasted barely a year and it produced a kid, Bukky Wright was alleged to have been married to three husbands without legally dissolving either of the marriages.
