The All Progressives Congress (APC) has swung into action to nip
in the bud the proposed impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako by the Adamawa
State House of Assembly.
The party stoutly rose in defence of the
state governor over the impeachment believed to be the handiwork of the
presidency to rubbish the governor over his confrontational attitude to the
presidencyrecently.
But the APC, it was learnt, was leaving
no stone unturned to ensure that the planned impeachment did not see the light
of the day and, as such, sent two of its governors to intercede between
Governor Nyako and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
But out of the two governors billed to
attend the meeting, only Kano State governor was on hand during the meeting, as
the governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wammako, could not make it due to
heavy rainstorm
which prevented his plane from landing
at the Yola International Airport and has to make a detour.
With the prevailing situation, only
Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nyako graced the closed door meeting with
the leadership of the Adamawa state House of Assembly, including the Speaker,
Ahmadu Fintiri; Deputy Speaker, Kwamoti Laori; Majority leader, Ishaq Bala
Mohammed and others which took place at the Presidential lodge, Government
House, Yola .
During the meeting, which lasted several
hours and ended late in the evening, it was learnt that the members had
dispelled the rumour that they were being prodded by the presidency to impeach
the governor, saying their recent action of checkmating the executive was in
tandem with their constitutional duties which they swore to uphold.
Kwankwaso who “mediated” in the meeting
simply told newsmen that he was in Yola to see Nyako for discussions that were
beneficial to the two states.
“I am here to see my senior brother. We
had some good discussions that are very much relevant to Kano and Adamawa
states,” Kwankwaso said. Meanwhile, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
has endorsed the move of the Adamawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday.
The state chairman of the party, Chief
Joel Madaki, during a solidarity visit to the assembly, said the party was in
full support of the latest actions being taken by the legislature.
“We have following the trend of events
since the assembly is proving to fight for the downtrodden hence, we are here
to identify with the assembly.
“Your ultimatum to the state is timely
because you are carrying all the people of Adamawa State along. We are here on
this visit for the people of Adamawa State and not the PDP. Please do anything
that will better the development of the state,” he said.
