The Nordic nation of
Norway has been ranked number one overall in the world in a global survey of
prosperity. This will be the sixth year in a row the northern European
nation has toped the highly respected list.
The Global Prosperity Index of
the Legatum Institute, a private investment firm concerned
with sustainable development projects worldwide, and based in Dubai,
the United Arab Emirates, has
released its annual compilation of 142
nations across the world, ranking them on measures ranging from Economy and
Entrepreneurship to Education, Health and Security.
Along with Norway,
three other Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Sweden, and Finland) made the top
10, and Iceland (another Scandinavian country) coming in at number 12, behind
the United States, in the top 20.
The report finds that
all top 10 most successful nations in the world are European or
European-majority countries; the top 20 are 85 percent
European/European-majority nations, with Asian countries Singapore, Japan and
Hong Kong (China) ranking at number 17, 19 and 20 respectively.
Nigeria ranks 125,
coming in at 18 of the bottom 20 least most prosperous nations. The West
African nation is ranked between Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. The bottom 20
nations are majority Black, mostly African countries, with the exception
of Arab/Muslim Middle East/Central Asian nations like Afghanistan (141), Syria
(136), Yemen (135), Pakistan (130), and Iraq (123).
The least prosperous
nation of all the 142 nations sampled for the second year in a row is the
Central African Republic.
