POLITICAL intrigues ahead of 2015 heightened on Tuesday night as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, met behind closed doors with leading members of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC)
Among those at the meeting at the Kano Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, that lasted up till 1.00 a.m. Wednesday morning, were former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, erstwhile Lagos State Governor, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Governors
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Magartakada Wamakko (Sokoto), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), former Governor Ali Modu Sherrif of Borno State, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, Malam Nuhu Ribadu and the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Bello Masari,
The decision by Tambuwal who is a card-carrying member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to meet with the APC chieftains did not come to many as a surprise considering the fact that Wamakko who is unarguably his political godfather defected from the PDP to the APC last week.
Even before now, Tambuwal, who is not likely going to dump the PDP for strategic reasons at the moment, had been accused of working in tandem with members of the APC in the House of Representatives to undermine the interest of President Goodluck Jonathan and his key supporters.
Just yesterday, the House of Representatives, presided over by Tambuwal, blocked moves by a member of the House, Mr. Linus Okorie (Ebonyi; PDP), to move a motion of urgent national importance aimed at eliciting the intervention of the House in the decision by Amaechi to dissolve the executive council of the Obiakpor Local Council of Rivers State.
The opposing voices of members of the House who are predominantly aligned with the APC and the G-5 governors were all Tambuwal required to block Okorie’s initiative that would have questioned the appropriateness of Amaechi’s controversial decision on Obiakpor Local Council.
