Late Chinaza Jona
For residents of Gyadina, near Gwagwa, a suburb of Abuja, the reason for which a young man, Mr. Nnaji Sunday Okechukwu, allegedly beheaded in cold blood his lover; one Ms. Chinaza Jona, remains a mystery.
According to the story by family members and neigbhours, the late Chinaza who hailed from Imo State, Okechukwu murdered his girlfriend in her apartment and made away with their baby.
Narrating the ugly incident, a relative of the deceased, Mrs Justina Ugwoke, disclosed that before her cousin’s gruesome death, she and her now wanted lover used to fight regularly.
She further added that the alleged murderer lover had warned her to desist from coming to separate them whenever they were fighting, and had once threatened “that heads would roll” before he finally leaves Chinaza.
Mrs Ugwoke claimed that on the night when her cousin was killed, her cousin’s neighbours called to inform her that the duo have been fighting as usual, and later they saw the man going out with their seven month old baby and a Ghana-must-go bag in hand. She said she immediately set out for the dead cousin’s house only for her to meet the door locked, a situation that prompted her to run to the Eze Nd’Igbo’s palace to inform him of the latest development as he was already in the know of the fractious relationship. “When we found the key to the room, we opened the door and saw my cousin lying dead with her neck almost cut off,” Ugwoke alleged.
To that end, the Eze alerted the police from Gwagwa Division who came immediately, took pictures and carried the corpse to hospital, she explained.
According to Mrs. Ugwoke, her late cousin had informed her that the reason why they used to fight regularly was due to her refusal for Okechukuwu’s proposal that they should use their only baby girl for money-making ritual, coupled with his not contributing to the little girl’s upkeep. Asked if both were married, Ugwoke explained that nothing formal had been done as Okechukwu initially used to come and go but later parked in with the late Chinaza. Confirming the ugly incident, Chief Peter Nwachukwu, Eze Nd’Igbo of Gyadina, admitted to seeing the lifeless body of the lady who was suspected to have almost been beheaded by her lover.
He explained that the lady was from Okwuato in Abo-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, adding that he was rendered helpless based on what he saw and had to invite the police. Similarly speaking, the chairman of Igbo community in the village, Chief Joshua Nwanaga said that one John Odo called around 10:30pm to inform him that the duo was fighting. Around 11:15pm, according to him, one Mr Daniel Ahotu called him on the same issue, adding that around 12:58am, one Mr Francis Ekegbede called to inform him that the said Chinaza had been killed. The late Chinaza until her untimely death, our correspondent gathered, was running a beer parlour.
The Divisional Crime Officer of the Division, DSP Okeren Famous, who spoke to our correspondent, confirmed the incident, while also acknowledging that the suspect was on the run with their seven month old baby.
When contacted also, the Abuja Command Police Public Relations Officer, Ms. Altine Daniel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the matter has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, of the command.
