***Operatives map counter-terrorism measures for Anambra
Following Wednesday’s arrest at Afikpo of 17 suspected Boko Haram
Islamists, policemen in the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki, yesterday searched
and restricted the official cars of commissioners, council chairmen and other
top government functionaries from the venue of a sensitazation workshop on
relevance of democratic governance.
Also, amidst security concerns in the South-East region, the Anambra State
Police Command yesterday presented what it called counter-terrorism measures
for the 177 communities in the state, saying it would help to tighten security
in the area.
The Anambra State Public Relations Officer, DSP Emeka Chukwuemeka, said the anti-terrorism
measures, which he described as “security tips against terrorism,” were
designed to ward off perceived insecurity and Boko Haram threats.
Officers of the anti-bomb squad numbering over 20 were stationed at the
entrance of the Women Development Centre-venue in Abakaliki and ordered drivers
of government functionaries to park outside while their principals were asked
to walk into the venue.
Also, at the Government House, not only was the number of security operatives
increased but the operatives attached to the main gate had to search vehicles
coming in and going out, including those belonging to members of staff, while
bomb dictating squad is now permanently stationed at the gate.
Presenting the document to newsmen in Awka yesterday, Chukwuemeka said the
security tips from the state command meant that people must know their
neighbours and should observe what such neighbours normally bring home at
night.
“Police has also urged landlords to conduct background checks on all their
prospective tenants and to always check their surroundings for suspicious and
dangerous objects,” he added. “It contains Anambra State Police Command
distress call number as 07039194 332, with a provision urging residents never
to take possession of or watch over any bag or object kept by unknown
person(s).
It added that “empty containers, gas cylinders, dustbins and other receptacles
not in use must be properly disposed of or kept away from the reach of
unauthorised persons.”
Meanwhile, the Director of Police Education, DCP Kabiru Ibrahim, said that with
the 20 schools already built within two years, the police special study centre
“crowns” the drive to bring western education closer and easier to the men and
officers of the Force.
