Identifying the Abubakar Shekau in Ibrahim Shekarau

By Chike Nnamani

After reading the acerbic attack and statement credited to a former Kano Governor and current Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to Gov Wike over the alleged demolition of a Mosque in River State, I couldn't spot any difference between him and the Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.

Perhaps that may be the reason their names are synonymous with each other.

I was alarmed because I have always respected this man as a scholar and PhD - who should place humanity above religion - not knowing he still reasons like an average almajiri in the north.

I wouldn't have been dismayed if I had read it from known extremists like Buhari, Kwankwaso or Ango Abdullahi - another scholar and professor whose utterances is the same as that of Miyetti Allah.

Quoting from the National Daily, Mallam Shekarau urged Nigerians to:

“... come together to condemn, in strongest terms, this irresponsible, reckless, rabble-rousing governor whose apparent AIM IS TO IGNITE A RELIGIOUS CONFLAGRATION, the kind of which has never been seen in recent times.”

Wonderful!

Now, my question to Shekarau is this:

Between the killing of Rev. Fr. Paul Offu in Enugu by herdmen and the alleged demolition of an uncompleted mosque, which one is enough to IGNITE A RELIGIOUS CONFLAGRATION in the country?

Between the raping and killing of a pregnant woman in Enugu by fulani herdsmen and the alleged demolition of an uncompleted mosque, which is enough to IGNITE A RELIGIOUS CONFLAGRATION?

How many times have Shekarau condemned the killings in nearby Enugu by herdsmen before going to observe what is happening in a distant Port Harcourt?

Or is he part of the army that wants to fulfill the vision of Ahmadu Bello in "dipping the Koran in the sea," just like the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau?
