SENATE President, David Mark, on Tuesday, said Nigeria’s
population census has failed to yield accurate figures over the years, adding
that such failures were recorded despite huge financial commitments by the
government.
Senator Mark, who
stated this during the consideration of presidential nominees for appointment
into the National Population Commission, said the new appointees need to
chart a new way forward.
The nominees, who were
approved on Tuesday, were Hassan Bashir and Olanrewaju Fayemi from Bauchi and
Ekiti states respectively.
“Population is a very
serious issue in this country and I believe that the new members would bring
something on board, so that we know our true figures.
“Every time we talk
about statistics in this country, depending on who you are talking to, we don’t
appear to have the accurate figure.
“I hope that they
would help to bring something on board, so that we can know our true population
in this country,” Mark said.
